Reading; connection and purpose

Out of the reading this week, what I most agreed with was speech purpose. I think that I have actually mentioned in one of the previous blogs that you have to believe in "what you preach." If you go up and start telling the audience something that you yourself don't believe in then chances are your audience will not either. Further more the audience won't be hooked and probably loose interests in what you are saying. You need to connect with what your purpose to the speech is in order to get a point across. Without that connection, there is not a point in going up and talking at all I think. This means that your topic and thesis should match what you think in real life so that you have a well rounded speech with a good point and get a good grade!

  1. That is an excellent point that you made about caring about your topic. I think that it is certainly true that if you do not care about the topic that you are speaking about it will be hard to connect with the audience and to make them care about your topic. Passion and conviction definitely go a long way when it comes to engaging your audience. I once heard someone say that when you give a speech it is 10% what you say and 90% how you say it. I don't agree with that, but I do think that despite the huge exaggeration there is a grain of truth behind that sentiment. Content is king, but when making a connection you need to have confidence and care about what you are saying. Good luck having a "good point" to your speech and in getting a good grade. I hope that I am able to do the same.
